FROM the first few bars of Waterloo through to the last waves of Thank You For The Music, there were plenty of Dancing Queens shuffling their dancing feet in the packed out auditorium of the Grand Opera House last night.
From the people that brought us Sing-A-Long-A Sound Of Music came an interactive tribute to the Swedish foursome, bringing with it ten years of hits, including nine number ones. What was essentially karaoke en-masse had the people of York, young and old, dancing, singing and clapping in the aisles to hits such as money, Money, Money, Does Your Mother Know, Voulez Vouz and Mamma Mia.
The on-screen lyrics, and hosts Benny and Bjorn, guided the audience through the Abba feast with party bags filled with goodies to be brought out at special moments during the live music show.
Flags waved during Fernando, specially-printed Abba money, waved and thrown from the balcony (no prizes for guessing which song this was for), while euro notes speeded around the giant screen, all ending in an explosive finale with the audience of Sing-A-Long-A Abba all simultaneously pulling party poppers to Thank You For The Music.
The lycra outfits, gold and silver lam, platform boots and blonde wigs worn by the Abba look-a-likes made sure the atmosphere was electric.
The music was fun, the performances were warm, and in all rather entertaining to the mixed generations before the cast, proving just how popular Abba was, and still is.
