I wish to remind S Stockton (Letters, February 17) that Rowntree Park was originally created as a pleasure park for the people of York.
It was never intended to become a wildlife haven although it is nice to see birds and mammals thrive in its environment.
At one time there were large cages stocked with various brightly-coloured species in the park for the enjoyment of visitors.
If we must have geese in the park their numbers must be controlled and they should be kept away from the bowling greens and children's play area.
Geese make good eating and perhaps the park authorities could supplement their income by making them available to a local game dealer.
It is a pity that after so much money has been spent on park improvements during the last couple of years a solution cannot be found to this problem.
