SIR Ben Gill, the North Yorkshire farmer who has spoken up so powerfully for his industry, today stands down as president of the National Farmers' Union.
After six years in the post, Sir Ben has become a national figure. He has led his union through turbulent times, dealing with the foot and mouth crisis, the BSE crisis and the long battle over changes to the Common Agricultural Policy.
Well done, Sir Ben. You achieved so much and leave big boots - green wellies, perhaps - for your successor to step into.
