York Groves put in a determined display only to lose 14-6 to high-flying Thornton in Pennine League division five.
In a tight opening, Thornton scored first with a drop goal but after sustained pressure Jason Dunn collected his own kick to touch down and convert.
Nevertheless, Thornton scored a converted try and just before half time added another drop goal to lead 8-6 at the break.
In the second half, Groves were forced to defend for long periods, with Paul Watson - joint man of the match with James Foster-Rain - excelling, and, although Paul Scott and Chris Smith went close at the other end, they had few opportunities.
Thornton sealed victory with a late converted try.
