NORTHERN Ballet Theatre launches the world premiere of David Dixon's adaptation of Swan Lake at Leeds Grand Theatre.
Artistic director Dixon sets his new version in New England at the start of the 20th century. In this time of long, lazy summers and old world grace, a young boy playing by the lake stumbles across a dead swan lying by the body of a young man, an experience that leaves a lasting impression on him.
Years later and fully grown, the young man enjoys his last carefree summer; struggling with his transformation into adulthood, the awakening of new loves and the loss of innocent friendships. As he walks in contemplative mood by the lake he is disturbed by movements in the water and a curious and beautiful young woman. His fate now sealed, he falls hopelessly and helplessly in love with her.
Tchaikovsky's score will be orchestrated by John Longstaff; Nixon has worked on the design with scenic artist David Gillan, and NBT's drama associate, Patricia Doyle, returns to the company to complete the production team.
Northern Ballet Theatre's Swan Lake runs at Leeds Grand Theatre until February 21 at the outset of a five-month tour. Box office: 0113 222 6222.
