Rock luminaries such as Eric Clapton, Jeff Lynne, Jools Holland, Paul McCartney, Tom Petty And The Heartbreakers and Billy Preston among others played to a packed Albert Hall to pay musical homage to the other "quiet" Beatle - George Harrison.
That was back in November 2002. The concert, which also featured George's son Dhani, is on CD and DVD and it is a belter. There is nothing mawkish, maudlin or sorrowful on this joyous celebration of George's musical and songwriting talents even though, in his Beatle days, he was eclipsed by McCartney and Lennon in the lyrics department.
One of the CDs in this double album is devoted to George's love of Indian music and influences and is expressively conveyed by Anoushka Shankar. The other CD features numbers such as Give Me Love (Give Me Peace On Earth) by guitar legend Jeff Lynne, If I Needed Someone (Eric Clapton), Honey Don't (Ringo Starr), My Sweet Lord (Billy Preston), Something (Paul McCartney), While My Guitar Gently Weeps (McCartney and Clapton). But the man who stole the show was veteran rocker Joe Brown as he closed the night with his chirpy, upbeat, ukulele-driven version of I'll See You In My Dreams. Only then did the tears begin to flow. Goodnight George, and thanks.
