I LIVED in Old Malton for a large part of my life, in fact I am 'a peaker' - a person born and reared in the village, as were my parents and grandparents.
Referring to excerpts from the History of Ryedale (February 2), I must correct some of the facts.
There was never a "Malton Priory", in fact when St Gilbert of Sempington created the priory, there was no 'New' Malton.
It is St Mary's priory, 'Old Malton' where monks lived at the Abbey House, near the church.
There has never been any reference to a lime kiln behind the priory.
I can remember, as many older people will, a lime quarry and kilns at the end of Highfield Road, now the rugby field, though still in Old Malton parish, but a long way from the priory.
When I retired I returned "home" as many people have and I still attend the priory because my family have for generations.
I now live in New Malton and I am still a peaker.
