PHIL Willis, Liberal Democrat education spokesman and Harrogate MP, has demanded that an Ombudsman be introduced to deal with student complaints following the introduction of top-up fees.
Mr Willis made the call while speaking in the Committee on the Higher Education Bill yesterday.
He said: "As the Government forces students into a consumer mentality, the number of complaints about the quality of education that they receive, will grow.
"The Government's failure to introduce an independent referee demonstrates how deluded ministers are about the consequences of this unfair Bill.
"An Ombudsman service will best protect the interests of both students and lecturers, and will force institutions to adopt a more student-focused complaints process."
Currently, there is no university ombudsman or independent adjudicator.
Each higher education institution is an autonomous body with its own procedures for dealing with complaints.
