THE newly-formed York RUFC youth development squad of Under-16s and U17s secured their first win in a close encounter with their Scunthorpe counterparts at Clifton Park.
Fielding a predominantly U16 side,York fell behind early on to a converted try before hooker Tom Bewick grabbed a try.
Scunthorpe edged ahead with an unconverted try, but York, negating the wind by keeping the ball in hand, were rewarded when wingman Adam Milner scored wide out.
York took the lead after half-time, flanker Rob Domville going over, the try kicked by fly half Darryl Fogg.
Scunthorpe soon drew level, but York responded with a great score. A good ruck led to the ball being spun through the backs, Fogg touching down and then adding the conversion.
York stretched their lead through Domville only for Scunthorpe to reply with a penalty try. From a poor restart by York, the Scunthorpe backs broke through some weak home tackling for a converted try under the posts to lead 31-29.
In one final York attack the ball found its way to winger Matt Brent who crossed for the winning score but the home side had to endure a nail-biting end as they defended two scrums in their own 22 to hang on and win 34-31.
