SARAH Rawden's letter ('Worshipping in cathedrals of consumerism', November 26) was very interesting and there is plenty with which to agree.

However, has Ms Rawden just arrived at this conclusion or is it something she has always believed?

Consumerism is now able to run rampant because most of its adherents have believed the claims pedalled by the advertising industry.

Your body must be a certain shape, you are socially inadquate if you don't have an up-to-date mobile phone/washing machine etc.

And oh, how we fell for it.

Far from being a new problem this scourge is the result of importing large amounts of American "culture" during 40-plus years.

The situation will only be changed when 'Britland' dumps the American link and adopts the more family oriented cultures of places such as France and Denmark.
