York RI U17's narrowly failed to win their first away game going down 14-5 at West Park Bramhope.
RI dominated the open exchanges until an injury to one of the Park players requiring the game to be stopped while an ambulance was called, affected the visitors more than the home team.
Both teams struggled to to keep possession on a slippery surface and with no side giving away kickable penalties it looked like there would be no score before half-time.
But on the interval, RI dropped the ball in the centres well inside the Park 22 for the home team to hack forward and win the chase for a 7-0 lead.
Although RI showed better team play in the second half, too often promising moves fell down as the wrong option or individuals tried too much.
Just as in the first half the home team broke out of their 22 capitalising on an RI mistake for a soft try.
With ten minutes to go RI improved with Elliott Richardson running out of defence before handing on to No 8 Danny Wright. He drew the fullback to give winger Jimmy Rae the run-in for the try. Gareth Stewart narrowly missed with the conversion.
As the minutes wore down desperate tackling from the home team prevented RI adding further scores.
