FRED Isles, City of York Council maintenance manager, says "there is nothing sinister" about the varying treatments given to footpaths in different areas of York (Letters, November 8).
Credit where it is due, the Lilac Avenue improvements have been a well executed scheme which benefits the area. However, why don't the same standards apply in other residential areas?
Specifically, Mr Isles, please explain why it was necessary for a good, level, safe and virtually undamaged Yorkstone-flagged footpath in Main Avenue, Heworth to be ripped up and replaced with Tarmac.
If you say the footway required maintenance, then why were the original flags not re-laid in the same manner as in Lilac Avenue?
Stone flags are a far more durable and attractive material than Tarmac.
Given the Pride In York campaign, the standards applied to Lilac Avenue should become the norm, not the exception.
M Warters,
Yew Tree Mews,
Osbaldwick Village,
York.
