AN investigation has been launched after a worker was killed in an horrific accident on a North Yorkshire road.
The man, who was wearing high-visibility clothing, was hit by two vehicles on the A658 at Birkham Wood, near Knaresborough, yesterday afternoon, as he tried to direct traffic. He died at the scene.
A North Yorkshire Police spokesman said the man, who is yet to be identified, was in the road when the collisions happened. It is not yet known if the man was working on the road itself or on a construction site nearby.
The police spokesman said: "A man wearing high-visibility clothing stepped out into the road to direct traffic to allow a colleague to move a JCB digger.
"On doing this, the male was struck by two vehicles and received fatal injuries."
The accident happened at about 4.10pm yesterday approximately 400 yards on the Knaresborough side of the B6163 junction, and police are appealing for witnesses.
North Yorkshire Police and the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) immediately launched an inquiry into what caused the fatal accident.
Police are appealing for witnesses who saw the crash or who saw the workers in the road beforehand to come forward on 01609 783131.
