A CAMPAIGN to turn a busy York street into a continental caf corner could find favour with city authorities, it has emerged.
Sue and Jim Hardie, licensees at the Blue Bell pub, Fossgate, are campaigning to have their street pedestrianised.
That option was ruled out earlier this year, but council transport chiefs have now softened their line. They have recommended Fossgate is included in future consultations for extending York's pedestrianised areas.
An investigation will also be held into the effect of reversing the traffic flow along Fossgate - meaning vehicles could only head from Merchantgate towards Pavement.
Mr Hardie said a pedestrian zone would be a boost for business. "It would be great, people not having to watch out for cars. It could only be good for the area and we will keep up the campaign."
Martyn Macdonald, director of Macdonald's furniture shop, said the idea was "superb".
"It would look so much nicer, especially with all the restaurants and cafs down here," he said.
At a meeting of the Fossgate Traders' Association, held earlier this year, all members present supported the no-vehicle option, if certain conditions were met.
The issue will be discussed by councillors on Thursday.
