MY Red Cell are just the right band for The NME New World Disorder Tour.
The lads from Barry, South Wales, arrive at Fibbers in York on Monday (1st) with Ludes and Future Kings Of Spain with plenty of disorder and chaos on board already.
On their autumn travels they have set fire to their bass player; one band member attended no fewer than 16 schools in his youth; and the group once walked from Barry to London for a gig because they could not afford the train fare. After four days of sleeping in fields, they found out the show had been cancelled.
So much for the hype; can they play? Well, NME has just made their limited-edition debut EP, the self-explanatory My Red Cell EP, their single of the week.
Meanwhile, the tour has been struck by its own disorder. Beijing's Hang On The Box, the only all-girl punk band in China, had to pull out after being denied travel documents. Apparently, the Chinese authorities cited problems with song titles and dismissed their music as "an inappropriate representation of Chinese culture". Ooh, that's sharper than a Simon Cowell putdown.
The New World Disorder Tour is chalking up 14 gigs in 15 days with York as the final destination. The running order changes each night and each line-up is completed by a local act picked by label A&R staff, local promoters and fans on music websites. In York's case, the honour goes to Sixty 6.
Doors open at 7pm; first band, 8pm. Tickets cost £5 in advance from Fibbers or £6 on the door, and the first 30 people to arrive will receive a free four-track sampler CD.
