YORK is basking in national glory after double success at this year's British Schools Orienteering Championships.

The Mount School won Small Secondary School category while York College lifted the Tertiary Trophy.

Mount clinched victory in the category for schools with less than 500 pupils at the National Championships, which were held at Delamere Forest, near Northwich in Cheshire and attracted more than 50 schools.

Emma White won the individual bronze medal in year six and helped her age group to silver in the team event. Her team-mates were Nina Anderson and Freya von Bismarck.

The senior school's year seven team of Katie White, Sophie Ives and Rebecca Springett also won silver medals.

Springett finished fifth in the individual rankings while Laura Lancaster came fourth in the year 13 category.

Tregelles, the junior department of The Mount, fielded a team of nine which came sixth overall.

York College quartet Shaun Adams, Matthew Edwards, Russell Baldwin and Hugh Carruthers won the Tertiary Trophy ahead of close rivals Scarborough Sixth Form College.

Year 12 boys Adams, Edwards and Baldwin were also third in the team event behind winners Nottingham and second-placed Ulverston. Other runners in the York team were Dan Noble and Dan Robinson.

FOOTBALL

York City Schools Under-12s produced a sparkling display to win 4-1 at Derby in the Michael Dale Trophy.

They scored early on when Nick Thompson turned sharply and scored in the corner.

Derby came in to the game in the second half and York goalkeeper Aled Griffiths pulled off two excellent saves. York took inspiration from that and Joe Dale made it 2-0 with a shot into the top corner.

Derby pulled a goal back, but York finished strongly to wrap up victory with goals from Oliver Box and Ben Johnson.

Thompson and Joe Breedon were outstanding for York, who are next in action at Nottingham on Saturday, December 6.

York City Schools Under-14s stormed back from 2-0 down to beat Bradford 3-2.

The York team were much sharper in the second half and were rewarded with an early penalty as Phil Smith was tripped in the box.

James Windall put the penalty away and York were soon back on the attack with Mark

Wilson going close with a free kick and a header from a corner.

As the York midfield created more chances, Adam Field was put clear by Phil Smith and he beat the 'keeper from 10 yards to equalise.

Minutes later Field seized on a loose ball in the area and turned well and put the ball into the net.

Bradford had a chance to draw level in the last few minutes but Dan Smith in the York goal turned a low shot around the post.
