YORK panto veteran Eileen Lavender clocks up her half century on the boards this Christmas.

Eileen, 65, has been involved in a staggering 50 festive shows, since first hitting the stage as a teenager for a performance of Aladdin in 1953.

Next month, the stalwart will use her wealth of experience to direct Dick Whittington for Joseph Rowntree Players.

Eileen said: "I just love being involved in pantomimes and I really enjoy working with young people. It's a joy to see the children's faces in the crowd and hear the remarks they make. I want to continue as long as possible."

Eileen is married with two sons and lives in Flaxton. She first appeared in panto for Rowntree Youth Club before working with various drama groups - most in York - over a 50-year spell. She has directed for the last ten years.

The Rowntree Players stage Dick Whittington at the Joseph Rowntree Theatre between December 9 and 13. Shows start at 7.30pm. For tickets phone 438518 or the Theatre Royal on 623568.

First night donations go to the York branch of the NSPCC and the Jamie Bucknell Appeal, set up to buy medical equipment after the Strensall teenager died of a heart attack two years ago.
