Frank Cartin, president of York Licensed Victuallers' Association, has spoken out about pubs damaged in football and alcohol related incidents ('Soccer hooligans cause pub havoc', November 17)
He claims: "If the problems are caused by people (fans) coming into York, then stop them!"
What a narrow minded, flippant, off the cuff remark to make about football fans. All city centre pubs were advised by the police that this fixture had the potential for trouble. To try and alleviate any flashpoints, advice was offered and co-operation was sought.
I could understand Mr Cartin foaming at the mouth if the police asked every pub in town to close for every home game, but they don't.
Of 23 home games they ask for one - this is hardly going to affect the takings over a season is it?
I bet his LVA members don't bemoan the visiting supporters of the other clubs spending their hard-earned cash in their pubs do they?
The police don't give advice just for the sake of it, they give it for a reason. If landlords choose to put profit before safety then they have only themselves to blame. People in glass houses shouldn't throw stones!
