NINE members of Castle Howard staff were today putting on their hiking boots to tackle an arduous trekking challenge in the Lake District to raise cash for the BBC Children In Need appeal.

Chris Metcalfe, head of building services, and his wife Ann; Duncan Peake, estate manager, and his partner Catherine Courtney; John Rushworth, of the works department, and friend Steve Hodgson; Martin Abbey, of Castle Howard Plant Centre; and James Shallcross, surveyor and estimator at the stately home, will make up one of ten teams of walkers taking part in the 16th annual Human Mountain Endeavour.

The theme on this occasion is River Deep Mountain High as ten teams of walkers will climb to the source of ten rivers and then up on to the top of ten summits.

"The River Deep, Mountain High challenge this year promises to be the hardest yet, as the ascent of Scafell Pike is an achievement at any time of the year," said Duncan Peake, estate manager, who is heading the Castle Howard team.

"The prospect of climbing England's highest mountain with the team is one to truly savour, even if it is in late November.

"We would like to thank the many staff here, friends and local businesses that have already pledged support and we look forward to raising as much money as we can for such a worthy cause. The Castle Howard team has been given one of the most difficult routes which will include the summit of England's highest mountain, Scafell Pike."

The event was organised by Sheffield businessman, Graeme Chapman, who has been awarded a MBE for his service to the charity. During the last 15 years the Human Mountain Endeavour has raised £300,000 for the charity. Last year the Castle Howard team raised £3,750 and this year they are hoping to raise even more money for children in the UK suffering from serious illness, disability or abuse.

The Castle Howard team has managed to raise more money each year and this year they are aiming to do so again.

Anyone who would like to help with sponsorship or prizes for a raffle taking place after the event should phone Natalie Daniels on 01653 648444.
