FENCERS from the Pocklington area are in sharp form.
Members of the Ridings Sabre Club have won a clutch of silverware at county level.
Club coach Adam Waller, Emma Little and Bob Waight won the Senior Sabre Team Championship at Rotherham with Waight taking the senior individual title.
Eighteen-year-old Daniel Gott, who has just left York Sixth Form College and is training to be an actor, won the Under-18, U-20 and novice sabre championships. Ridings Sabre have a burgeoning youth section and achieved top five placings in all events including Under-16.
The club's latest successes came in the Yorkshire age group qualifiers in Harrogate from which the top four in each age group will represent Yorkshire at the British Youth Championships in January.
Eleven-year-old Greg Beattie, from Thixendale, out-fenced his elders to win the Under-14 section in his first-ever competition.
He held an eight-point lead early on and defended his position well to defeat Andrew Gillott (Sheffield) 15-13 in the final.
Kjeld Tversted (14) finished second in the U16 event after being seeded six from the second round onwards.
He put out second seed Liam Cook (Sheffield) 15-4 before losing to the experienced Richard Lloyd-Jones in the final.
Ridings Sabre was formed two years ago by solicitor Adam Waller, who had coaching experience at the University of West England in Bristol and in Hanover, Germany, where he was working for a law firm. He obtained financial aid from East Riding Council to get equipment for the club which is predominately for younger fencers.
Ridings Sabre meet each Wednesday (7pm) at the Francis Scaife Sports Centre in Pocklington.
