IN reply to the article about the proposed demolition of Laurens Manor Nursing Home to make way for yet more flats in Lawrence Street, York (November 10), we have already written to the council about our feelings.
This plan involves the demolition of yet another perfectly good building in Lawrence Street for the sake of greed. We would prefer to see it converted, and to say the property is too spacious to do so is ridiculous.
A few weeks ago in the Property Press we saw for sale a similar property which had been converted into apartments and sympathetically added to, so why can't the same thing be done here?
People who live in this area are sick and tired of all these flats being built around them, whatever happened to houses?
To pull down a perfectly good property to build yet more flats is diabolical. In the end, all it ever comes down to is money.
How many more of these lovely buildings have to go before the council comes to their senses and says "no more".
Just because we are not in the city centre they think it does not matter and before long there will be no history left around here. It is not as if the building is going to rack and ruin and falling apart and needs demolishing, they just want to do it to make more money, while eyesores like Northern Dairies are still standing.
Mr and Mrs C Dove,
Milton Street,
Lawrence Street, York.
