CHRISTMAS came early for shoppers in Coppergate as the festive lights were switched on.
Pupils from Archbishop of York Juniors and St George's schools got people into the spirit by singing a selection of Christmas songs before Majorie Stuttle, mother of murdered York backpacker Caoroline, flicked the switch to reveal this year's illuminated displays.
Mrs Stuttle has strong links with the Coppergate centre and Caroline's memorial stands in the grounds.
She was helped by ten-year-old Fiona Jacques. The Sherburn-in-Elmet youngster won a painting competition run by the Rainbow Foundation, which was set up in Caroline's memory.
York Minster will be the venue for the next big light show, when the historic monument is engulfed in a spectacular display on November 27.
York Pop Idol Hayley Bamford will be among those providing the music and festivities in Duncombe Place, from 6pm, before the Minster light show, which was used last year and proved massively popular.
Stars from the Theatre Royal and Grand Opera House pantomimes will also be on hand to lead the fun.
