A NEW high vehicle warning light system is set to be built at Walmgate Bar, York.
The height detection system, to be installed in the New Year, will warn vehicles they are too high to get under the bar before they reach it. It will cost about £30,000.
Sensors and warning signs will be built in Lawrence Street.
The bar is still temporarily closed after a lorry got stuck and damaged it on Friday.
Ray Chaplin, City of York Council head of engineering consultancy, said: "The system will provide a flashing warning sign to approaching oversize vehicles.
"This latest event unfortunately demonstrated why the system is needed."
Council workers were today stabilising the bar's arches.
Engineers found a low risk of falling masonry after the lorry accident.
Mr Chaplin said damaged stones were being dismantled and replaced.
Working hours had been extended to try to re-open the road as soon as possible, he added.
The council hopes the road will be re-opened on Monday - provided workers do not find more extensive damage.
