A FURIOUS Labour councillor has accused the ruling Liberal Democrat group of "stopping democracy."
Shadow executive member for planning and transport Tracey Simpson-Laing had forwarded a motion to last night's meeting about the dangers of "amber gambling."
It called for a study at York's major road junctions into how often motorists, motorcyclists and cyclists jump red lights or go through on amber.
Coun Simpson-Laing said studies had shown the high risks attached to "amber gambling."
She highlighted the junction between Water Lane and the A19 as a particular problem in York. But as the debate was about to start, executive member for planning and transport Ann Reid tabled an amendment that meant the issue was diverted to an executive meeting without debate. Coun Reid said: "I do recognise the importance of these issues but I feel this needs a report from officers."
Coun Simpson-Laing replied: "Democracy is being stopped here. I have great concerns that the motion will be lost, while serious injuries and even deaths continue to happen."
