YORK City Schools footballers enjoyed an unbeaten weekend against their counterparts from Spen Valley.
Leading the way were the Under-11s who were involved in a thrilling goal feast, winning 7-5. The goals were shared by Adam Thornton (4) and James Edmund (3).
Thornton netted the opener from close range but by half-time Spen Valley were leading 2-1.
Thornton's second brought York level and two well-taken goals by Edmund put York 4-2 up, only for Spen Valley to draw level with a couple of goals.
York kept pressing forward and Edmund completed his hat-trick and Thornton added two more before a late consolation by Spen completed the scoring.
Will Pepper and Jacob Gore excelled in York's midfield, while Thornton's finishing proved decisive.
The teams will meet again this Saturday at Heckmondwike.
York's U13s put on their best display of the season to beat Spen Valley 3-1 with goals from Craig Smith, Chris Green (penalty) and Jack Crawley.
Centre-back Tom Wragg starred in defence and Lewis Graham did well in goal.
York's U12s were forced to settle for a 1-1 at York RI's New Lane ground in an excellent match.
Joe Dale and Mike Byram combined well at a short corner to catch the Spen defence off guard and Dean Lisle flicked on the cross for Gareth Fisher to head in at the far post.
Spen equalised with an unchallenged header midway through the second half.
Goalkeeper Aled Griffiths and captain Ryan Qualter shone for York, who are next in action at Derby on November 22.
Also in action last weekend were York's U14s, who were denied victory against Rotherham by a late goal.
They started slowly against a strong Rotherham team but opened the scoring when good work from Kevin Kosinski on the right set up James Windall to shoot home.
The South Yorkshire side got one back after a scramble in the York area just before half time but York regained the lead when Phil Smith scored.
They had a great chance to go 3-1 up when they were awarded a penalty but Adam Field's spot-kick hit the bar.
York's defence held out against repeated attacks until five minutes from the end when a Rotherham short corner found an unmarked striker in the box who hit the equaliser from two yards.
York U15s are at Scarborough on Saturday while the U11s trabvel to Spen Valley.
