IT may only be November, but Christmas lights are already making an appearance on York's streets, heralding the start of the festive season.
Adam Sinclair, chairman of York's Chamber of Trade, said the Christmas lights in Stonegate had been sponsored by housing company Persimmon Homes.
He said: "The step forward we have achieved this year is impressive relative to the lack of Christmas lights in recent years.
"There is a continuing improvement in the presence of Christmas lights in the city."
Mr Sinclair said York was a city that "lends itself" to Christmas. He said: "The city is a unique Christmas shopping venue and this will ensure that we continue to attract Christmas shoppers year after year."
A City of York Council spokesman said: "We are working hard at the moment in many parts of the city centre to put up and test Christmas lights, ready for the big switch-on on Thursday, November 27.
"We also work in partnership with retailers across the city centre in areas like Coppergate and Stonegate to ensure that both residents and visitors have a Christmas lights display to remember."
