OCCUPATIONAL therapy patients at York Hospital are benefiting from new equipment bought with the help of local fundraisers.

Almost £1,300 was donated towards the cost of a new spa chair, which enables people who would otherwise be bed-bound to sit out as part of their therapy.

Some of the money was donated by customers of Sainsbury's in Monks Cross through the Penny-Back Appeal, a contribution came from York Lions Club and an additional £500 has come from the funeral collection of York Lions member Bob Furman.

Mr Furman suffered a stroke and his wife specified that the collection should go to benefit others who have had similar experiences.

Sarah Craigie, senior occupational therapist with Selby and York Primary Care Trust, which runs the department, said the chair would help to promote independence.

She said: "We are delighted to accept this new chair from the York Lions and we would like to thank all those involved in raising money over the past few months."

York Lions Club president Peter Jesse, said: "Everyone in the York Lions Club is pleased to see our fundraising efforts go to such a worthwhile cause.

"The spa chair will make a real difference to a number of people being treated in the occupational therapy department.

"Bob Furman was an extremely valued member of the York Lions Club and we feel this is a fitting way to remember his hard work for the organisation. The new chair will be a direct help to others who have suffered a stroke."
