The Royal British Legion has launched its annual Poppy Appeal and, on behalf of the citizens of York, I am honoured to support this most worthy cause.
Last year the appeal raised more than £50,000 in the city of York, with the money being spent on welfare schemes, benevolent services, resettlement and work for the disabled.
This reflects the hard work of many voluntary organisers and collectors who raised most of this money. Over the years the public and businesses in York have given generously to the Appeal. I do hope you will continue to give it the support it deserves.
The Honorary Poppy Appeal organiser for the city of York is Joe Munday who is anxious to recruit new collectors, particularly for street collections which this year will be held between November 5 and 8. If you can give a little of your time to help the Poppy Appeal, contact Denise Edgar on 01904 670677 during afternoons from Monday to Friday.
Remembrance Sunday is November 9 and we shall be at the Cenotaph at the top of Leeman Road for the annual service.
I hope it will be well supported.
Councillor Charles Hall,
Lord Mayor of York,
Mansion House,
York.
