IS your headline about the BNP's recruitment drive (October 28) a sign of our times?

A chilling reminder perhaps that if the police, judges and so called do-gooders don't get their act together and tackle crime, then civil unrest stalks around the corner.

Bluntly, is this the time for the vigilante or private armies?

The sorry plight of Doug Unwin is not unique in today's blatant street violence. In Micklegate during the evening rush hour I saw two youths brawling in the street while onlookers were too frightened, or blas, to intervene.

Who needs to read about terrorism abroad when it is happening on our doorstep every day of our lives?

Do we have to wear body armour just to pop down to the shops?

York's surrounding district has become a no-go zone at night.

The police call this non-urgent crime.

To me it seems this non-urgent crime is the reason why many elderly people are terrified to go out at night.

Non-urgent crime can be likened to a leaky tap that you know you will fix but never do, until it becomes a major flood.

This "riverbank of unrest" cannot be allowed to break.
