AFTER a long flight from America, we boarded a York-bound train at Manchester Airport.

Because all the luggage compartments were full, we put our luggage and ourselves in the space near the toilet and sat on the drop-down seats.

The toilet door was open and a terrifying sight met us. The compartment was disgustingly filthy, but being in desperate need, I went to the toilet, but considered it more hygienic not to wash my hands than have to use the taps.

The rest of the train was hardly any better; the floor, walls and what used to be a carpet at the entrance doors had a thick build-up of slimy-looking grime.

It was ironic, given the state of the train, that there was a poster on the wall encouraging people to go by train to a wedding reception. Hope they provide overalls for people in their finery.

Also, why is a single fare from the airport to York almost £20 when the return is around £22? How can this be justified?

We arrived at York Station at around 10.15am and had a little rubbish to dispose of. Where are the litter bins?

On the way out of the station, with our luggage on a trolley, we found the lift and exited via a dark, smelly underground tunnel. We knew better, but strangers could be forgiven for thinking they had been taken into the sewers of the city.

Never mind following America to war - just follow their standards of cleanliness in open areas, shops, toilets, paths, car parks. Everywhere was kept clean and it was all done with pride, good grace and a smile.
