York RI got back to winning ways in Yorkshire 3, a first half penalty by fullback Geldart giving them a 3-0 win at home to Northallerton.
Despite being up against a bigger pack and playing against a strong breeze, RI kept the visitors under pressure.
New signing Thomas broke through the back line to go close to scoring twice in the first 15 minutes.
After one RI sortie Northallerton were penalised for off-side and Geldart put over the kick.
Play switched from end to end and at times RI had to rely on the boot of Mathew Yates who was having his first run-out out after injury.
With the breeze at their backs in the second half odds were on an RI victory, but dogged defence by Northallerton and a couple of missed penalty kicks saw the game go down to the wire.
