CONCERN that the Anglican communion may be torn apart by the appointment of an openly homosexual bishop prompts me to ask at what price unity?
In the 21st century the denial of the contribution gay clergy make, the lack of tolerance it signals to the rest of society and the movement away from the inclusivity of Jesus' message of acceptance and love, undermines the basis upon which true unity can be sustained.
I write as a Unitarian minister from the oldest existing non-conformist chapel in York.
I speak for myself and for my congregation who have been happy for me to conduct same sex blessings at our chapel in St Saviourgate for some years now.
More particularly, our General Assembly took a clear stand in 1977 stating that we would not discriminate against gays and lesbians and that they would be welcomed into our ministry on a basis of full equality. We are proud of the contribution they make.
