YORK just scraped the aggregates both home and away by one shot as they beat Selby 61-59 in their Famous Grouse Top Ten Group game.
At Selby, Ian Boyle and Philip Scott were always in control and despite losing the last three ends they still won 19-14.
It was completely the opposite for York in the triples, where Paul Mooring, Phil Emmerson and Dudley Williams dropped a six to trail 15-5. They won the remaining four ends to gain some respectability but lost 15-11.
At York, David Stroughair made short work of his singles, winning 21-5 in only 13 ends.
It was a good job he did win by such a margin as the home side of Michael Bruce, Graham Brooke, Phil Parsons and Graham Instone were totally outplayed in the fours. Level at 5-5 after six ends, York could only win two more ends before perishing 25-10.
Even though York won by only two shots, they picked up 11 points to Selby's four.
York's ladies had an excellent 118-66 aggregate win against Selby in the Yorkshire Ladies' League to gain the maximum ten points.
Melanie Brooke, Sheila Turpin, Joyce Chelin and Maureen Thomas were in excellent form as they trounced their opponents 37-13, while Helen Walker, Trish Harrison, Maureen Walker and Michelle Mooring had a slender one-shot lead at 19-18 with two ends to go before sealing a 27-18 success.
At Selby, Linda Harrison, Sue Kirkpatrick, Jean Williams and Trish Stevens had a great start, scoring a four, followed by a six, then a single to lead 11-0 after three ends. They confirmed their superiority with a 33-16 win.
Carol Instone, Sue Tomlinson, Marilyn Andrews and Brenda Love rallied magnificently from 19-12 down to win 21-19.
In the second division of the Yorkshire Ladies League, New Earswick had an outstanding 100-58 victory over Barnsley but only picked up six points after two rinks narrowly lost.
At home, Maureen Wood, Moyra Headley, Maureen Wilson and Pat Walker only lost five in their 36-6 triumph, but Lys Jerrum, Jean Bartnett, Ann Thompson and Kath Hardcastle left too much to do on the last end to lose 18-15.
At Barnsley, Gill Clark, Diane Hardy, Colleen Raw and Dot Kay had a great second half to their game. They countered from 14-11 down to win 30-14. Margaret Moss, Maureen Cooper, Joan Lister and Pat Storey let an 18-10 lead slip with six ends to play to lose 20-19.
Teens topple Thornaby
York notched a fine 35-14 aggregate triumph at Thornaby In the Yorkshire Under-18s League division one.
Phil Herridge, Adam Liddell and Zoe Eagles were tied at 4-4 after seven ends before pulling away to win 17-7 and Paul Humphries, Josh Cahill and Adam Tattersall had a great start leading 10-1 after seven ends before eventually winning 18-7.
But New Earswick's disappointing start to the season continued with a 26-17 defeat at champions Scarborough.
Rob Domville, Lewis Ashton and Josh Hough led 11-9 with time for two more ends but dropped a three on the last to go down 13-11. Michael, Nick and Johnny Ollis were also involved in a tighter game than their 13-6 defeat suggested.
Mighty white
Yorkshire always had the edge in their Roses battle against Lancashire at the new Leeds Indoor Bowls Club winning 119-102 on aggregate.
York was represented by eight players with one from New Earswick in Ray Clark, whose rink lost 24-12.
Mick Parker, Phil Emmerson, Mal Harrison and Graham Instone always had the upper hand as they won 19-14, while John Emmerson, and club-mate Frank Turner, skipped another tight game in which they won 19-17. Phil Parsons was in the Glen Skipp rink who had the biggest winning margin of 30-13. Mark Walton's rink also had a comfortable 21-14 win, while Alec Atkinson's team lost 20-18.
