MIKE Tavener's letter about the funding of the proposed Ouse footbridge in York (September 27) shows a disturbing aspect of the thinking of our council officials.
Just because the bridge would be funded by Government money does not mean there is no cost, as he seems to suggest. Government cash still comes from our taxes.
The ugly and expensive Layerthorpe Bridge - a corner of York that will be forever Coventry - was also funded by external money: £4.5 million that came with the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food relocation in the 1990s.
However when the bridge ran over budget, as such projects always do, the local taxpayer had to stump up the extra £300,000. I don't want to pick up the tab for yet another unnecessary engineering project. To make it easier for pedestrians to travel from the station to the city centre, stick a row of bollards across Lendal Bridge and close it to road traffic. It would save millions and cut pollution at the same time.
