York RI RUFC' youth team lost 17-10 at Yarnbury in a match which ended in controversy.
RI's forwards got a rolling maul on the move and were about to go over for a try under the posts when the referee blew the whistle afraid the maul was going to collide with the posts, even though they were covered by protective padding.
It denied RI the possibility of finishing the match all-square.
Yarnbury had taken the lead but Dan Hunt forced his way over to make it 5-5, stand-in kicker Gareth Stewart just failing with a touchline conversion.
Yarnbury regained the lead against the run of play ten minutes in to the second half but RI's forward strength paid off. With Gareth Stewart and Shaun Thompson to the fore, they mounted a rolling maul that saw Lloyd Carlton crash over. With the conversion missed the scores were level.
After Yarnbury had scored a converted try from a rare scrum in the RI 22 the game reached its controversial climax.
