SMALL fish dominated the 46-peg John Smith's Hospital Cup match on the Ouse below York on Sunday as the bream and skimmers did their usual disappearing act.
Derek Barker (Acomb Tackle) led from a peg on the Palace bend, where he alternated between the pole and a small, cut-down Drennan feeder for a mixed net of roach and perch scaling 5lb 1oz.
Phil Austin (Armley Angling) was above the concrete block in the pumper at Fulford, where he used a chopped worm attack for 4lb 10oz of perch to a pound.
Rob Morris (Acomb Tackle) ensured that he and Barker cleaned up in the pairs event when he took third place from a peg at the top of the pumper. Like his comrade he alternated bomb and pole with maggots for a mixed net of 3lb 12oz
Others: Tim Harrison (Anglers World York) 3-10-0; Ken Wallis (York Tackle) 3-9-0.
York anglers were in the money at both of the York region's premier match carp waters. Cliff Dawson won at Woodlands and Roger Holmes was successful at the Oaks.
The mid-week open match at Woodlands was hampered by gale-force winds and those with the shelter of an East facing peg fared the best in the field of 65.
Keith Kotchie (Featherstone Anglers) began a good week at the North Yorkshire complex with victory from peg 12 on Partridge. Offering corn at 6 metres, he netted 63lb 4oz of carp to 7lb.
Lyndon Roberts (MAP Elton) was second from peg seven on the same lake with another corn tempted bag of 60lb 14oz.
Others: Stuart Newberry (Darlington Angling Centre) 48-2-0; Cliff Dawson (York Tackle) 44-5-0; Mark Coyne (MAP Elton) 43-2-0; Dean Smith (Tekneek Trabucco Elton) 42-13-0.
Sunday's 64-entry match on Maple Lake at the Oaks went to Paul Taylor (MAP Elton) from peg 54. Offering maggots tight to the far island at 12 metres he dripped in pellets and groundbait through a tiny cup to keep the fish coming.
His net of fish from 8oz to 2lb scaled 47lb 6oz beat Neil McFarlane (Spenborough), who was nearby on 56. McFarlane alternated pellet and maggot fishing tight to the bank into the corner for another all carp net of 45lb 8oz.
Others: Pete Cowan (Oaks) 38-0-0; Mick Herrington (Bob.Co Oaks) 36-12-0; Gary Pawlett (Oaks) 35-10-0; Roger Holmes (MAP Elton) 35-6-0.
