YORK City Schools Under-12s' footballers handed out a 5-1 finishing lesson to Wakefield Schools.

Ben Johnson opened the scoring by chipping in from an acute angle and a brace from Nick Thompson, followed by a Joe Breedon howitzer, made it 4-0 at the interval.

Wakefield pulled a goal back after a rare lapse in defence before Joe Dale cut in from the left to complete the scoring.

York's next game is away to Leeds on Saturday. The squad is: Aled Griffiths, Ryan Qualter (Huntington), Tom Hope (Oaklands), Tom Chelin, Sam Linguard (Millthorpe), Ryan O'Reilly, Nick Thompson, Joe Dale (All Saints), Joe Breedon, Oliver Box (Tadcaster Grammar), Alex Fowler (Canon Lee), Murray Mclusker, Adam McMahon (Fulford), Dean Lisles, Mike Byram (Joseph Rowntree). York Schoolboys U11s' first game of the season was abandoned shortly after the start of the second half when a wall collapsed on a young spectator as reported in yesterday's Evening Press.

The West Yorkshire Cup tie against Hull was tied at 2-2 with York coming back twice to level the scores.

Hull took the lead after only two minutes but the home side hit back with a breathtaking left-footed strike from Jack Maud midway through the first half.

The visitors regained control just before the break when York were caught unaware at the back but another fine strike from man-of-the-match Callum Maloney made it 2-2.

Play was stopped shortly afterwards with both managers agreeing to meet again at York on Wednesday, October 29.

Nathan Kilby performed well at the heart of the home defence with Sam Byram and Connor Qualter also working tirelessly in midfield.

NETBALL

QUEEN Margaret's and Joseph Rowntree Schools continued their domination of the netball scene. The Escrick-based school beat Jo Ro 8-5 to win the York area Under-16 National Schools' Tournament after the match stood 4-4 at half-time.

The previous week Joseph Rowntree had beaten Queen Margarets in the U14 competition. This time the roles were reversed with Queen Margaret's coming out on top in the eight-team round robin tournament.

Queen Margaret's beat all their opponents apart from Millthorpe, who forced a draw. Joseph Rowntree also drew with All Saints but beat The Mount 16-0, Archbishop's 15-1, Millthorpe 10-5, Huntington 7-3, Lowfield 14-0.

Both Queen Margaret's and Joseph Rowntree will represent York in the county round on Saturday, November 22, at Hembleton.
