CUSTOMERS at a flood-prone pub in York are to get a lesson in the dangers of flooding while they drink.
The Kings Arms in Kings Staith, York, is taking part in the Environment Agency's national flood awareness campaign, which was launched today.
Posters and beer mats at the pub will warn regulars to defend their properties from flooding before it's too late.
The Kings Arms was selected as one of 20 pubs in the North East to feature the advertising as the business floods so regularly. Landlord Mike Hartley has even prepared his own flood plan to protect the pub.
York MP Hugh Bayley said he strongly supported the scheme on behalf of everyone in York whose homes are at risk of flooding.
He said: "The Kings Arms is a symbol of what floods can do. Every time York floods, pictures of the Kings Arms are on TV and it makes people realise what the risks are."
He said it was very important that people in York take the Environment Agency's advice and protect their homes from flooding.
The campaign also includes posters in the toilets saying Your house does not need a leak! Customers are asked to call the agency's floodline on 0845 988 1188 for advice.
Agency chairman John Harman said: "The pub is a focal point for many communities and if we're really serious about getting our message to the heart of those communities then pubs can't be ignored."
