A JEKYLL and Hyde performance saw New Earswick All Blacks ARL side go ahead but then fall to an 18-16 defeat at Kippax in Yorkshire League senior division.
All Blacks led 16-4 shortly before the break but they made too many errors in the second half and Kippax scored the winning try and conversion three minutes from time.
Kippax went ahead with two penalties inside eight minutes. Carl Pallister got an equalising try after 19 minutes and six minutes later he dummied his way through to send Trevor Sadler crashing over for a try which Pallisters convenrted.
Pallister opened up the defence again five minutes later to send Lee Nelson flying over from 25 yards out, and he added the extras from the touchline to make it 16-4.
Kippax hit back five minutes before the break with a try wide out and it was all downhill for the All Blacks from then on.
Another try wide out five minutes after the restart reduced Kippax's deficit to 16-12.
There were no further scores for 27 minutes, but poor tackling by All Blacks allowed the home side to get an equalising try near the posts, with the conversion deciding the game.
York Groves moved up to fourth places in Pennine League division five after a 28-10 win over West Bowling 'B'.
The visitors scored two tries, with one converted, to go clear after Groves had led with a Jason Dunn penalty.
The Terriers came back with Nige Ridsdale touching down a try in his first game this season. Dunn converted, but he was unable to add the extras to the next try, Gareth Evans' first for the club.
Groves led 12-10 at half time and increased the lead when player-coach Simon Moat powered over soon after the break, Dunn goaling.
West Bowling scored an unconverted try, but Groves struck again when impressive centre John Rushworth finished an excellent handling move with a try, Jason Dunn converting.
Moat put the game beyond West Bowling's reach with his second try of the game. The visitors scored a consolation try and conversion in the final minute.
Chris Smith was Groves' man of the match, well supported by tough tackling Keith Holmes and strong running Rich Needham.
York Acorn 'A' continued their dominance of Pennine League division five with their third straight big win, Victoria Rangers 'A' being hammered 62-0.
The chief architects were stand-off Craig Fox and second-rower Paul Payne. Kyle Palmer marked his debut with two tries, and scrum-half Mick Calam was impressive.
Acorn's other points came from tries by Paul Sawyer, Richard Scott, Fox, who also kicked two goals, Gary Isles, Payne (2), Barry Fox, Carl Rollinson (2), Andy Scott and Martin McTigue, plus three goals by Stephen Waldron.
A depleted Heworth 'A' team scored their first win of the Yorkshire League division three season, beating Lock Lane 30-13.
Jon Jewitt opened the scoring with a 60-yard interception try, man of the match Matt Corr goaling, but Lock Lane went ahead with a try, conversion and drop goal.
Corr burst through from 20 metres for a try and conversion. Gary Wilkinson added a 40-metre penalty, but Lock Lane scored a converted try to get back within one point.
Heworth held out under pressure and, with runs by Corr and Nigel Wilson, regained control. Chris Hammerton made space for Dan Sinclair to cross, Watkinson goaling. After the visitors had two players sin-binned, Watkinson kicked two long-range goals and added goaled Jewitt's final try.
