YORK'S top amateur footballers kicked off their bid to win the Ernie Fairclough Memorial Trophy with a 2-0 friendly victory over West Yorkshire outfit Red Triangle.
The match was the first of the season for the Leeper Hare York and District League representative side, managed by Bill Pearce.
Played at Garforth Town, Pocklington's Baz Gargett missed a penalty for York in a goal-less first half.
However, Gargett's Pock team-mate, Neil Wilford, spared his blushes, scoring twice after the break, including a 25-yard screamer, to seal the win.
The match formed part of the York side's preparations for their clash against a Scarborough and District League representative team at the end of the campaign, when the Ernie Fairclough Trophy will be up for grabs.
Pearce singled out Copmanthorpe goalkeeper Andy Phillips for praise for a string of fine first half saves.
Dunnington's Ian Burgess, Pocklington's Mike Murr and Dave Reasbeck, who plays for T&L Selby, also had good games.
Eight of the original squad named by Pearce called off and even two replacements drafted in then pulled out at the 11th hour.
It could lead to a number of other players being given their chance in the York side's next friendly, against Yorkshire Old Boys in November.
