AFTER five days of serious traffic disruption, searching questions need to be asked about the suitability of York as a venue for such a huge event as last weekend's motorhome exhibition.
There was plenty of room on Knavesmire for the thousands of vehicles but we do not have the roads to cope with huge volumes of traffic in the west of the city, and beyond.
How many visitors to the later stages of the wonderful York Festival Of Food And Drink vowed never to return after experiencing jams as far back as the A1 only to find the Askham Bar Park and Ride service was gridlocked?
Do the motorhome owners bring any revenue to the city except to petrol retailers?
How many of those travelling to smaller York events had their journeys seriously disrupted, as happened to some joining the inspirational Memory Walk held by the Alzheimer's Society at The Retreat on September 20?
What will the great and the good attending Royal Ascot in York in 2005 think of similar traffic?

...I AM glad the motorhome show has brought matters to a head.
It seems nonsense that the Tadcaster Road from the A64 towards the Sixth Form College is narrowed to one lane for a while.
The road from Bishopthorpe at the Sixth Form College lights is too narrow.
Why do we not have exit slipways only on to the A64 from the two bridges either side of Bishopthorpe, one for east-going traffic, one for west-going traffic, instead of channelling everything into the present bottlenecks?
The end of meetings, racing or otherwise, is the time when when most congestion occurs.
