CABBIES may be notorious for their chatter, but a North Yorkshire taxi firm is about to become famous for its politeness.

The nation's first Courteous Cabby Award has gone to Des and Paula Peirson of Appleby's Taxi service in Pickering, who are thriving because of their caring ways.

"It doesn't cost you anything to be polite," said Mrs Peirson.

Now their thoughtful attitude has attracted scores of loyal customers in the area.

"We have found it's the little things that make the difference," said Mrs Peirson.

"For our disabled passengers I will go and get the wheelchair and put it in the car, then help the customer in.

"With our older passengers we will go and help them from the door, making sure they have locked up safe, and will not leave them until they are safely back home.

"You have got to think about your customers."

They also pick up prescriptions and help with shopping.

"I only became involved in the firm three years ago when my husband Des had a triple heart by-pass operation, and I came in and kept the business going.

"But I am still doing it now because we are so busy and have so many customers, so I think it says something for the caring service," said Mrs Peirson.

The couple will receive a £100 'tip' from the Campaign for Courtesy, who organised the award, at the Dean Court Hotel in York on Friday October 2.
