I FULLY sympathise with the residents and drinkers of Pocklington over the change of their pub name to the Mucky Duck (September 16).
The Exhibition Group has a history of changing pub names on its estate.
The Anglers' Arms in Goodramgate became The Snickleway Inn a few years ago.
A change no doubt planned to encourage legions of tourists clutching a well-known guidebook detailing the alleyways and passages off the streets of York to get to the pub.
Whenever I and my friends meet for a pint of Magnet, it's never at the Snickleway, it's always "see you in the Anglers".
Pub names do matter.

...WHICH species of "duck" has waddled its way on to the Mucky Duck's signboard?
With the head and beak of a whooper swan, the long neck of a Canada goose and webbed feet like an overgrown platypus, the only duck-like feature to its credit is a pintail's backside.
Whoever dreamed it up should be tarred and feathered!

Ancress Walk,
York.
