I WRITE in response to your request for suggestions for the future development for Coppergate. The recent television series Restoration, fronted by Griff Rhys Jones, on the need to restore some of the many old dilapidated and historic buildings throughout the UK has been most interesting.
I suggest one of the smallest of these could be bought and rebuilt here in York on the Coppergate site, thus providing an additional tourist attraction close to the city centre.
Funding for the project may be provided by a developer and the city council.
The media could publicise the event and help provide additional funding for a worthwhile monument to enhance York's beauty.

...LIKE many others I rejoice at the rejection of the Coppergate scheme, while keeping my powder dry for the next enormity which York council tries to perpetrate against the city.
I gave evidence against the council's attempt to solve its financial difficulties at the expense of the city's environment, and give thanks for the result to the inspector and minister as well as the host of objectors who marshalled compelling evidence to oppose the scheme.
However, I do think it would be better to concentrate on the case in hand and not bring in extraneous matters.
The best way to commemorate the Jewish victims of the York massacre of 1190 is to ensure there are no racist crimes in our midst in our own time and that we are not associated with racism on an international level.
I will be no part of any attempt to use the racist crimes of the distant past either to stop environmental outrage or to appear to condone injustice in our own times.
