CAN anyone explain how City of York Council processes planning applications? One such application which has been granted allows someone to remove a person's livelihood and deprive the community of a service and also part of our heritage.
I refer to Nick's fish and chip shop on Lawrence Street, one of the few "traditional" fish shops left, which is being forced to close so the building's owner can turn it into yet more flats.
While I appreciate the need for housing I cannot see how the council can permit something which will deprive the community of a valued amenity and a family with an eight-year-old child of their income.
It's probably a bit late now to do anything as Nick fought it quietly by himself and lost; but I should love to know if anything can be done, or if other readers were aware that this sort of thing still happens.
It seems to me that money still wins over the "little man" every time.
