IF Selby Warriors Amateur Rugby League Club thought they where going to have it all their own way in Pennine League division five then they were brought down to earth by Thornton.
Although Warriors won 13-12, they were given a tough examination by the visitors.
Mark Hanson's penalty put Selby 2-0 ahead before scrum half Wayne Fennel beat two would-be tacklers from ten yards out to score. Hanson's kick put Warriors 8-0 up.
Big drives by forwards Ramskill and Barker set the groundwork for loose forward Hanson to break through and off-load to supporting hooker David Sowden, who raced twenty yards to score and make it 12-0 at the interval.
Thornton responded with some excellent play to get two ties and level the scores.
The end-to-end game was decided by stand-off Carl Bardauskas's drop goal 11 minutes from the end.
York Acorn 'A' began their division five campaign by thrashing Bailiff Bridge Panthers 70-6.
Chief architect of Acorn's powerful performance was scrum-half Mick Calam, who received excellent support from centre Steven Irving, teenage stand-off Andy Henson, and second rower Matthew Chapman, who was man-of-the-match.
Acorn's points came from tries by Paul Sawyer, Matthew Embleton (2), Irving (2), Rich Scott, Calam, Fran Starkey, Chapman, Barry Fox, Alex Cowton, Henson and Stephen Waldron, who also kicked nine out of 13 goals.
