A TRUCKER was killed in a three-lorry crash on the A1M in North Yorkshire.

The accident happened on the road's southbound section near Allerton Park, near its junction with the A59.

Police said the three lorries were involved in a shunt.

The driver of the rear lorry, a white Mercedes, suffered serious injuries and was confirmed dead at the scene.

He was a 60-year-old man from Chatham, Kent. He has not yet been named.

There were no other injuries in the crash.

The A1M southbound was closed for more than six hours after the incident and police diversions were put in place.

Long tailbacks quickly built up, with queues reaching as far back as Boroughbridge within a short time of the accident.

Much of the motorway was covered in diesel fuel.

Inspector Dave Sutcliffe said: "We are seeking witnesses to the collision or anyone who saw the manner of driving of the Mercedes preceding the collision."

North Yorkshire Fire & Rescue Service sent four fire engines and an emergency tender to the incident, which happened just before 1pm yesterday.

Firefighters used cutting equipment to free the dead driver from the cab of his lorry.

Anyone with information about the accident is asked to phone traffic constable Mick Foulston on 01423 539474.
