YORK spinner Dan Broadbent is to weave his magic on the Sub-Continent this winter.

He is one of four Yorkshire players included in the England squad for the Under-19s World Cup in Bangladesh in February.

He will be joined by fellow White Rose county spinner Mark Lawson and pacemen Tim Bresnan and David Stiff.

Gillamoor-based Broadbent has been making rapid strides at Yorkshire Academy this season and has claimed a stack of wickets to help push York to the top of the ECB Oxbridge Yorkshire County Premier League this season.

The teenager, a former Ryedale School pupil, first shot to prominence with Pickering CC.

Yorkshire strike bowler Matthew Hoggard is all set to resume his international career after being chosen in both England's Test squad and their one-day party for the forthcoming tours of Bangladesh and Sri Lanka.

And Yorkshire captain Anthony McGrath is also included in the one-day squad which means he will travel with England for the first time.

After struggling with his form at the start of this season, Hoggard then suffered a serious cartilage injury in late May which kept him out of action until August 24 when he began his comeback by playing for Yorkshire Phoenix against Glamorgan Dragons at Colwyn Bay.

Since then he has made big steps forward and last week he registered his career-best first class figures of 7-49 in Yorkshire's nine wicket Championship win over Somerset at Headingley.

After his unexpected selection by England at the start of the summer, McGrath faded out of favour but he has been in sparkling form for Yorkshire, making 92 and 127 not out at Colwyn Bay and an unbeaten 67 against Somerset.

Surprise was expressed in some quarters that Darren Gough is not in the one-day squad but he has not produced any exceptional performances for Yorkshire since announcing his retirement from Test cricket and although chairman of selector, David Graveney, insisted Gough would be considered for the West Indies later in the winter his international career would seem to be at an end.

There was double joy for Worcestershire's Bradford-born off-spinner, Gareth Batty, who has been named in both squads after twice being called up against South Africa this summer and then released.

It was also confirmed yesterday that Yorkshire left-hander Michael Lumb will go to the new England Academy at Loughborough this autumn and that spinner Richard Dawson and paceman Steve Kirby will also attend special sessions there.

Glamorgan paceman Simon Jones' rehabilitation from a serious knee injury will continue with the academy.

Jones, 24, has not played a first-class match since rupturing the cruciate ligament in his right knee during the first Ashes Test in Brisbane last November and only recently returned to second XI action.

An ability to produce deliveries in excess of 90mph gained Jones, son of former England fast bowler Jeff, his Test debut last summer when he claimed four wickets in the win over India at Lord's.
