IF the Post Office workers do not accept that we are now living in the 21st century and that alternative mediums of written communication are taking over from the posted letter, then a withdrawal of their service will only drive more people to e-mails and faxes to the detriment of the Post Office ("Post strike 'no' would mean threat to jobs", September 9).
It does not take much imagination to see that if they are not careful and continue to fail to provide a cost-efficient service, the postman will be joining the dodo.
Most forward-looking businesses are reducing staffing levels as mechanisation takes over, and the way forward is to job share to allow more time for leisure, as a right, rather than have it forced upon them by redundancy.
