Welcome to York & District Citizen's Advice Bureau's monthly advice column. Each month we will attempt to answer questions on different subjects.
This month it is topical - as the summer comes to a close we focus on the safety of your heating system. This could save you money and in extreme circumstances your life!
Q. I've had my boiler for years but it still seems to be working OK. How do I know if it needs replacing?
A. You may need a new boiler if your current one is particularly old or noisy, if it leaks water, or frequently needs new parts. However, only an expert will be able to tell you whether you're definitely due for a replacement.
Boilers tend to break down more often in the winter months - exactly when you need them most. So, if you've got an old or unreliable boiler, it might be worth getting it checked right now.
Q. There are so many adverts out there for boiler engineers. How can I choose a reliable one?
A. Always get at least three different companies to come and give you a quote for any work you need. But check first, as some companies might charge a call-out fee. Before you commission any work on your central heating system, contact Corgi to check that your chosen contractor is properly registered. Corgi can provide a list of registered installers in your area. If you suspect that a company or individual is working illegally, report them to Corgi via its hotline on 01256 372488 or its website www.corgi-gas.com .
Q. Where can I go for reliable information about different models of boiler?
A. Take a look at www.boilers.org.uk. This contains a database, compiled by boiler manufacturers, that provides basic details and energy efficiency information about most boilers made in the UK. It can help you find out more about what sort of boiler might suit your needs.
Q. My engineer told me that condensing boilers are expensive and unreliable, is he right?
A. Modern condenser boilers are as reliable as non-condensing ones. However, some contractors still have a negative view of them.
Q. British Gas told me that you can't buy parts for my boiler any more, so I need a new one. What should I do?
A Always get a second or third opinion or, better still call your boiler manufacturer to check whether parts are still available before you make a decision.
Q. I've heard that I should have my boiler serviced regularly. How often is 'regularly'?
A All gas boilers should be checked on an annual basis to make sure that they work safely and efficiently. Failure to have the service done may invalidate some extended warranties or service contracts.
